Skye and Wester Ross
Skye has been a popular tourist destination since Edwardian times thanks to the expansion of train services into the Kyle of Lochalsh in the 19th century. The completion of the Skye Bridge in 1995 only added to the already considerable allure with visitors captivated by the famous black peaked mountains, the Cuillins, and distinctive sea bound landscapes. Fine food, hill walking, wildlife, Gaelic culture and heritage sites abound, rivalled only by the attractions back on mainland Wester Ross, epitomised again by striking coastline, steely lochs and imposing mountains. Notably, pockets of Wester Ross enjoy a temperate climate on account of the Gulf Stream, which explains the palm trees in Plockton and glorious gardens at Poolewe and Attadale.
