Outer Hebrides
Located north west of the Isle of Skye, the Outer Hebrides (or Western Isles) is a beautiful archipelago of some 200 islands, from Lewis and Harris in the north to the Uists and tiny Barra in the south. On the few inhabited islands, the native Gaelic language has survived as have ancient heritage sites from the prehistoric Calanais standing stones (Lewis) to the elaborate pre-Reformation St Clement’s Church (Harris). Encircled by the Atlantic Ocean to the north west and the sheltered Minch to the east, the islands of the Outer Hebrides are also famed for their fabulous sandy and uncrowded beaches, edged by clear blue water.
